I was walking around the sacred craft shapers expo in Ventura a few weeks ago when I came across John Peck. Our paths have crossed several times in the last few years, we hang out in some of the same Yoga circles and a few years back I camped next to him and his nephew Jesse in San Juanico. Every time I run into him it seems like he is a different John Peck.

In Mexico isolated with no one around he talked my ears off with tales of living in a commune in Hawaii, astral travel, yoga, government conspiracies, early days of surfing and a plethora of other tales and yarns. Other times I would see him at legends and shapers events and he would act like he barely recognized me and appear visibly uncomfortable in the midst of large crowds and decide to just sit and meditate in front of a thousand of his closest friends.

I snapped this pic with his permission of him meditating in the center of the Ventura sacred craft event. After I snapped the picture and began walking away I noticed a slight grin on one side of his face I thought to myself “what a cosmic prankster”.

On a recent vacation to the west coast of Florida, It was pretty flat as the west coast usually is, so I decided to give SUP “stand up surfing” a try. It was MUCH harder than I anticipated and really worked a lot of muscles you would not think stand up surfing would effect. It is the complete opposite balance wise than surfing so you spend a lot of time using core muscles to stay up.

I am still not sold on doing SUP for surfing as it gives an unfair advantage in the lineup and seems to invite a lot of bad Karma from other surfers. As a workout fitness tool I am completely hooked! When it is small and there is no surf ,grab a stand up board and go on an adventure and get fit at the same time.
